Before the 1880’s, there were no societies for jewelers. The jewelry industry was a bit of a free-for-all. There were no guilds, at least in America. There were very few regulations. If fact there were decidedly few jewelers. It’s just not something that interested most people at the time. That all changed with the diamond discoveries in South Africa and the methodical plan to market diamonds to the masses. If there was going to be an engagement ring business, there needed to be engagement ring stores, and if people were going to trust them, they needed to have standards. That’s been the rule ever since.
The Gemological Institute of American and the American Gem Society were both created to improve the credibility of jewelers. GIA was a college to teach people how to do it, and AGS was a professional society to give standards to see that they actually do it. Jewelers of America is a collaborative buying society for Jewelers. National Association of Jewelry Appraisers is just as it sounds, an association of jewelry appraisers.
